The William Watts Sherman House is one of the great building located at 2 Shepard Avenue, Newport, Rhode Island and for now, it owned by Salve Regina University.

This house was designed by an American, Henry Hobson Richardson and for the interiors, designed by Stanford White. Actually it was designed by Richardson and Gambrill, but it is no evidence of Gambrill’s involvement in the design. the builder of this house is Norcross Brothers and its frame was constructed in New Jersey first, and then shipped to Newport for assembly.

The house was basically rectangular. It is about 53 by 81 feet in dimensions. On the west, there are two principal entrances and the porch on the east.

The William Watts Sherman House was built in 1875-1876 and became one of Richardson’s masterpieces. Now the prototype of this house known as the Shingle Style in American architecture.
