This is a conference centre and marine science laboratory facility that built for Ocean Discoveries. Designed by de Hoog & Kierulf, this building not only for conference centre but it also consist of wet and dry laboratories, seminar rooms, offices, and both formal and informal meeting spaces.
It has a scallop shell structure that became the inspiration for the form of the entry and main reception areas. The roof using a heavy timber that formed as a series of stressed-skin plywood and glulam bays with modular components that were precision shop-fabricated, individually trucked to Bamfield, and assembled on site. To enter the building, you must enter through hinge – a compressed space ringed by elliptical glulam columns that separate the foyer from the reception room.
